PAW 2019 WARGAME SHOW

Early start for me and with snow on the ground I drove to Plymouth and met the boys to put on our demo game.

It was Pirates trying to rescue one of their captains from an island prison.

This is a small defence protecting the island.

Unfortunately Plymouth is a two day show and I could only attend for one day.

TRADERS

This is an area of increasing frustration for me. While I appreciate that Plymouth is a long way down in the South West, Iam fed up for both visitors and traders. This year as before there were many of the approximately 18 traders selling the same or similar ranges.

If they have something you want, then great. No so though for the traders.

I bought 2 cans of spray paint for £8 each, three sellers all competing and you could see the prices change throgh the day as they all became aware of what the others were selling and for how much.

3 x 20mm diecast Pz IVs

6 Osprey books including 2 brand new versions of rulesets Dux Bellorum and Lion Rampant. The other books are all on the HYW so maybe a new game/army beckons?

Was it worth it? In my opinion a 100 mile journey for the traders No, but meeting my mates yes.

PAW COMMITEE, please consider traders a bit more for both their ability to make a profit and for giving cutomers a greater choice.

January’s Game – The Bridge

Have had a bit of down time with war-gaming with Christmas etc.

Now I am back in the flow as we all got together for our first game of the new year.

We decided to put on an AWI game.

Background. 

Both sides had identified the need to secure a river crossing. The British had sent a small force to take and hold the objective. This included what can best be described as a Light Brigade consisting of Light infantry , Hessian Jagers and Indians!

Thankfully for the British they out marched their line infantry companions and made it to the bridge before anyone else.

Rules

We used our old favourites, Fields of Honor with house rules for the Indians.

The Battle

The British lights had decided to strategically place themselves behind the fence line and await the on coming Americans. This was also described by the American command as hiding!

The Americans were the first to get their 2nd Brigade on the table followed the next turn with a quick 6 bring on their last brigade. The British were a little slower and at one point it looked like the Americans would be engaging in melee with the lights before any British support arrived. The Americans sent two brigades up the road and another towards the river beside the fields as they believed the river to be fordable.

The American lead brigade of militia got held up in a fire fight with the British lights, this in turn blocked the road and never really managed to allow the 3rd Brigade to pass them and get into the fight. The 3rd brigade got so frustrated that they resorted to deploying their artillery on the bridge to provide supporting fire. While this did help, it also blocked the bridge forcing the infantry to wade across the river. On their left flank they had crossed the river just in time to engage the British 3rd Brigade that had finally advanced up the road.

Both sides traded shots and attempted to engage in melee but the willingness and determination of the militia was never quite enough.

Attrition managed to whittle the Americans down in to a too weakened a force to carry the day. They withdrew in good order to fight another day allowing the British to sneak out from the fences and hold the bridge( American commander not me).

This was the first game of AWI that Steve and Laurie had played and both confessed it was an interesting era and may possibly pick some figures up at their local show PAW2016 which is on in a couple of weeks.

PAW 2015

Don’t Call Me Yella, Fella!

 

Last weekend was PAW 2015. This is a great local show to many of my wargaming buddies who live in Plymouth. As I have said before this is a great and growing show. Good free parking on site (get there early). More on the show later.

Laurie lives in Plymouth and normally takes responsibility for putting on a game. This year he decided it was time to unleash a project that has been growing over a number of years.

A Wild West themed game.

I have to admit that I have never played anything to do with the Wild West but my excitement level was whetted when I saw the terrain. The building looked fantastic and the internal detail on many of them just conjured up ideas of bar room brawls. The hand built mine and train all added to feel and flavour.

Well the premise of the games was a coming together of minds, not.

A group of cowboys led by Wilson “Will” Getya who have just driven a herd of cattle into town seek some chill time in a local saloon hoping to spend little but party hard! (Sounds like an 18 -30 trip to Ibiza). They knew the town well as one of them had a half-brother Marshal Karl Phogg “KP” Nut who was a lawman in the town. While in town, it would be good to have a catch up with his brother and his new girl (ex good time girl from the saloon)Wendy Wonnit.

Unknown to the cowboys and the lawmen, was that a local cattle Baron, Woody May-Kit was in town with his boys looking for the girl who left him for a lawman. If he could not have her, no one would or there would be no one for her to have. (He doesn’t sound nice). The head boy was a baddie called Billy Beans “Claim Jumpin ” Hatfield, a man so mean even his undertaker wouldn’t look him in the eye.

The rules used were “Dead Man’s Hand” these were given to me to use as umpire. This was literally the first time I had seen them but within 20 mins I had the gist. They basically work on a card system and once activated each character gets 3 actions. An action can be to move/ aim/fire etc. More time spent aiming helps but players can try to trump your turn by playing cards from their hand which have specific instructions on them.

Unfortunately none of the players knew the location of Wendy, I had randomly generated her location. The Baron’s men had 20 turns to find her and convince her to return home!

The baron’s men started by strolling up the town’s main thoroughfare entering shops looking for her. No real issue until an unlucky roll meant that the barber resented being bullied and spoke back. This had the result of a shot ringing out and him falling to the floor dead. Billy was living up to his reputation. This ensured the lawmen reacted and confronted the gang. Both gangs started moving around the town trying to get the upper hand on their rivals. The odd shot hit home and casualties started to build up on both sides.

Soon the stage coach started to come on the table. Inside was Wendy returning from shopping. Both sides saw Wendy at the same time and headed for the stage coach as it pulled up outside the undertakers. Karl headed for the coach with the last of his posse and brother. All were hit but only light wounds. The coach team fired back as well and hit an outlaw.  Each side traded shots until like a Quentin Tarantino movie Wendy bursts out the coach, aimed and fired. The turn aiming paid off as Woody was hit and was dead before he hit the floor. It was at this time that Billy decided to get outa town.

 

Overall.

The terrain was perfect.

The rules were good. In the game you place a playing card next to each character in the game. These are turned over to reveal their value and highest goes first. The initiative phase could be slow at times and the playing of cards distracted from the game so next time we will have character records on the table edge and cards will be placed there along with any wound markers etc.

All agreed it was a game we would like to play again soon.

All the buildings and figures were from Laurie’s collection. Brian played Woody, Steve played Billy and Laurie played Karl, Wilson and Wendy. I was the umpire and thoroughly enjoyed the day

 

The Show – PAW

Venue – Ideal. two large halls on the level with plenty of parking.

Entrance fee £4 a day – fair. A 2 day show.

Demo games – Good selection and balance from Fantasy/Historical/Sci-fi

Competitions – Located in the second hall along with a few traders and the bring and buy. Very well supported, cannot tell you much more than that.

Traders – Increasing year on year. This year there were 3 selling similar ranges. This can be a bit disappointing but it did enable me to get a good deal on some Perry box sets, 3 for £50. getting a good balance of traders in vital.

Bring and Buy – Big, mostly Fantasy/Sci- fi but I did pick up some osprey MAAs for £1.50 each, and Games workshop’s Man O War complete for £15 and Trafalgar rules for £10.

Catering – Weak. Food soon ran out. This needs to be addressed, otherwise people will bring their own and this will put less coppers in to the club. when there was food it was OK.

 

I will next be at Legionary 2015 on the 2nd of May 2015 with my War of the Roses Game. Hopefully see some of you there.

PAW 2014 Wargame Show

Had a weekend off and went to PAW (Plymouth Association of Wargamers). Please check out this show next year if you get a chance as it has a really nice feel to it. Small but very friendly and like Exeter (Legionary) has a good venue with FREE parking. Traders are a little thin on the ground compared to larger shows but there is a good spread. The bring and buy was a haven for 40k fans but very lacking for historical fans which meant that although I bought little the items I had to sell went quickly.

Met up with a few friends at the show and played a game. We played an era that I have never played before, American Civil War. Everyone else had played this era many times before. That said they had all played Fire and Fury but this time we were playing the Regimental version. Following a quick chat I seemed to become umpire. This gave me the opportunity the get a great overview of the rules and I have to say I am very impressed. the figure were 28mm and from a mixture of manufacturers including Perry, Foundry and Dixon.

I enjoyed the game so much that maybe ACW will be another era I might drop into!

  The game we were playing was The Battle of Olustee 20th Feb 1864

This turned out to be the only battle fought in Florida. It came about due to the Confederate loss of Vickesburg and Port Hudson during 1963 and their need to secure alternative suppliers of Beef.

Union forces landed at Jacksonville on Feb 7th and started to advance Westward facing at worse screening troops belonging to Confederate Brig General Joseph Finnegan.

The battle was fought largely in a clearing in an area of light woods with marsh/bog alongside railway lines. The Confederates were dug in near Lake City and attempted to draw the Union into attacking them through the use of cavalry.  This failed. Growing impatient the Confederates finally decided to attack, both sides fed more and more troops into the growing battle. Finally the Union broke, not stopping their retreat until they reached Jacksonville.

OUR GAME

I have to admit that during Saturday the game played out very much like the historical version. The union were unable to hold up the massed units of confederates and most of the union troops failed their morale and started to withdraw only to be rallied and feedback into the affray. Sunday started with the Union centre holding and reinforcements coming to their aid. The Union left was isolated and slowly swamped by the Confederates. The battle ebbed and flowed all day with no clear winner and so the game was declared a draw.
